I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing and mentoring Matt Green for two and a half years. In 2019, Matt was selected as an inaugural iCivics Equity in Civics Youth Fellowship member. This program brings students from across the country together with experts to discuss the role of equity in their respective civic learning environments. Matt and 11 other students from across the country came together to collaborate and strategize on how best to illuminate equity issues experienced by students. They launched the inaugural student-led #CivicsForUS virtual listening tour and managed a national social media account. Through this effort, he and his peers informed a steering committee of leaders in the civic education space.
Matt balances leadership and teamwork as a supportive, motivational team player. Matt returned in 2020 to join the Alumni Board to help guide the next cohort of fellows as a mentor and alumni captain of Team Red for the Youth As Civic Experts Network — a virtual component of the Equity in Civics Youth Fellowship responsibilities. His support and encouragement contributed to an effort where students accumulated over 5,000 responses from all 50 states where fellows surveyed their peers (5th grade through college) to discover what students think about their civic learning experiences.
Matt is a thoughtful leader, a polished speaker, and a strong civic and community ambassador. His civic passion and care for his community shine through various press experiences during a contentious election cycle in 2020, providing the nation a preview into what students from his community were experiencing at that time.
